Meet Donna

After graduating from Florida State University, Mayor Deegan began a career in broadcast journalism that spanned more than 25 years, culminating in her role as lead anchor at First Coast News. In that role, she traveled to every corner of Jacksonville, listening to residents, telling their stories, and investigating issues that affected local communities—from public safety and education to healthcare and neighborhood development. Her reporting consistently held those in power accountable while amplifying the voices of everyday residents.

During her time on air, she became known for her integrity, empathy, and her ability to translate complex issues into stories that everyone could understand. She formed deep connections with viewers by showing up in neighborhoods, attending community events, and sharing in both the triumphs and challenges of the people she served. That same commitment to listening and engagement now defines her leadership—ensuring residents not only feel heard, but have real access to their local government.

Her personal journey with breast cancer further strengthened this bond with the community. By sharing her treatment openly on air, she allowed residents to accompany her through diagnosis, surgery, and recovery. Many Jacksonville residents felt as though they were right there with her, walking through the journey together. That transparency inspired her to found the DONNA Foundation in 2003, which has since helped thousands of cancer patients and families facing the financial burdens of treatment.

Beyond policy, Mayor Deegan draws inspiration from a daily ritual: running along Jacksonville’s beaches each morning and photographing the sunrise. For her, the sunrise embodies optimism, hope, and the promise of brighter days ahead—a reflection of her belief that Jacksonville’s best days are still to come.

Mayor Deegan lives at the beaches with her husband, Tim, and is the proud mother of two children. She remains committed to building a Jacksonville where every resident has a voice, every neighborhood can thrive, and brighter days are always on the horizon.
